Teenage Suicide of Boys and Girls – Facts vs. Fears

Parents of girls of any age who heard or read a recent national news story said that the suicide rate of teen girls had doubled, it would naturally cause those parents to worry. What the news reporting did not reveal was that the “doubling” was from 52 to 104. Any number of suicides is too many, but suicide is FAR from the top danger to your teenage girl.

What news outlets from Dr. Phil to the Nightly News did not report was that the annual number of suicides for teen boys is in the thousands, and one of the main causes of death. While 104 annual suicides for teenage girls is too many, it’s even more important for parents to keep an eye on girls’ self-mutilation as that number is in the tens of thousands each year.
